​Tell the House Education Committee: Schedule and Pass SB 13!

SB 13 has already passed the full Senate unanimously on Feb. 25^th and is waiting to be heard in the Housed Education Committee (HEC). With only a week left in the legislative session, it is critical that the HEC hear SB 13 immediately and give it fair consideration. 

SB 13 State-Tribal Education Compacts would allow Tribes to enter into formal agreements with the NM Public Education Department (PED) to manage and oversee schools based on Native American language and culture. The bill aligns with the NM Indian Education Act, which requires the PED to partner with Tribes, Nations, and Pueblos to increase tribal involvement and control over schools and the education of students located in tribal communities.

This bill:

• Empowers Tribal sovereignty in education—allowing Tribes to design and implement curriculum, assessments, and learning standards to support Native students’ success.
• Ensures equitable funding by granting State-Tribal education schools access to state resources to operate and implement successful academic models that work for Native students. 
• Centers Native language and culture and honors the identities, teachings, and values of Native students and their tribal communities.

Contact House Education Committee members TODAY and urge them to schedule SB 13 for a hearing and pass this bill immediately. 

This bill is vital to supporting New Mexico’s Native students and it’s critical that we pass it during this 2025 Legislative Session.
