For more than three decades, the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty has partnered with New Mexicans to improve the health and economic well-being of our communities. This year, we invite you to explore the different ways our work reaches people and places across New Mexico, mapping our impact from local communities to statewide systemic change. New Mexico is also making an impact on the national landscape. Together with our partners, NMCLP has helped drive groundbreaking policy wins, demonstrating how bold, community-driven action can create change. At a time when unprecedented federal cuts are putting essential programs at risk, New Mexico continues to show what’s possible when we invest in our communities.
NMCLP participated in a Student-Led Feedback Forum hosted by the Central Consolidated School District. We were able to listen to the voices of over 50 students from the Kirtland area and gather meaningful input from Native American students on the Yazzie/Martinez Action Plan.
NMCLP provided training to 50 Southern NM Promotoras in Mesquite on the recent settlement that was reached with the NM Department of Workforce Solutions. As a result of the settlement, workers can have COVID-related Unemployment Insurance overpayments either forgiven or returned. Promotoras play a crucial role in communicating critical information to our state’s rural and Spanish-speaking communities.
NMCLP hosted a Silver City screening of Last Days on Lake Trinity, a documentary that highlights the experiences of manufactured home park residents facing displacement. Stay tuned for additional film screenings that will be hosted across the state in the coming year!
2,040 households reached a settlement with the owner of seven manufactured home communities as a result of unlawful fines, fees, and utility billing practices.
23 households reached settlements in two cases filed after the illegal condemnation of their apartment complex: one against the City of Española and the other against the property’s landlord.
150 Farmworkers reached a settlement with a green chile grower who kept money that was supposed to be passed on to workers through the Chile Labor Incentive Program.
Roswell was able to resume their free food distribution after the City attempted to prohibit the group from offering meals to the community during demonstrations.
NMCLP convened a Las Cruces Community Healthcare Event bringing together advocates, healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and community members. Attendees learned about the impacts of HR1 and explored strategies for New Mexico to protect healthcare coverage and affordability.
NMCLP filed new litigation on behalf of residents of San Juan Mobile Home Park residents in Aztec, alleging violations of the Mobile Home Park Act and the Unfair Practices Act.
