Support HB 426 in Committee on Monday
Every New Mexican deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. But for many residents of manufactured home communities (MHCs), that security is under threat.
17% of NM’s housing units are manufactured homes, crucial for affordable housing, especially for seniors and low-income families. Many own their homes but rent the land, and out-of-state investors often raise rents, forcing residents to lose their homes with no affordable relocation options.
HB 426 – The Opportunity to Purchase Act, sponsored by Rep. Parajón, offers a straightforward solution to protect these residents and preserve affordable housing. This bill gives residents notice and a chance to buy their manufactured home community through a cooperative or nonprofit, helping keep rents affordable and prevent forced relocation, as seen in states like New Hampshire, Vermont, and Colorado.
