Access to healthcare by indigent New Mexicans – Protect and improve the Medicaid program in New Mexico, and improve access to healthcare for uninsured and low-income people at New Mexican hospitals. Food Stamps in New Mexico – Advocate for changes in New Mexico’s Food Stamp Program that will increase enrollment in the Program and improve its effectiveness. Temporary Assistance to Needy Families/General Assistance – Protect and improve the New Mexico Works (TANF) and General Assistance programs in New Mexico. Improve the state system of legal services available to the poor – Develop New Mexico’s system for providing civil legal services for low-income New Mexicans by working to increase funding for nonprofit providers of legal services and by providing trainings for public interest attorneys. Legislative advocacy – Advocate at the state legislature to improve or protect programs and laws that impact indigent New Mexicans. Homelessness – Advocate for funding for programs that serve the homeless and for laws that protect the rights of homeless persons. The Center helped to establish a legal clinic for people who are homeless in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The clinic operates out of the Mesilla Valley Mission of Hope and is staffed by volunteer attorneys. Day Laborer Act Enforcement – Ensure effective implementation of the New Mexico’s Day Labor Act, which provides increased legal protections for our most vulnerable working poor. Indigent
Defense Reform – Press for an independent commission
to
oversee the Public Defender Department and seek other ways to improve
indigent defense in New Mexico. Access to Workers' Compensation for New Mexico Farmworkers - Advocate for changes to the NM Workers' Compensation Act to include farmworkers in mandatory coverage.
